UBALDO BOSELLO - OUT OF TIME: 1980

Ubaldo Bosello was born in Padua, Italy, in 1927, the city where he lives. He is self-taught. In the immediate postwar period he collaborated with the “Cinematographic Center of the Padua University” (CUC). During the fifties he participated in the realization of a General Cinema Bibliography (Ateneo Editions, Rome), published several articles in the Milan review “Cinema”, and cooperated with Silvio D’Amico’s “Spectacle Encyclopaedia” edited by the Institute for Cultural Cooperation in Rome. Since 1960 he has been a member of the Venetian Engravers Association. He has participated in hundreds of collective graphic and painting exhibits in many parts of the world. In 1982 an anthological exhibit ("From Realism to Utopia") was dedicated to him in the Civic Gallery of his home city.

Ubaldo Bosello è nato a Padova nel 1927, la città dove tuttora vive. È autodidatta. Nell'immediato dopoguerra ha collaborato con il "Centro Cinematografico dell'Università" di Padova (CUC). Negli anni 50 ha partecipato alla realizzazione di una "Bibliografia Generale del Cinema" (Edizioni Ateneo, Roma), ha pubblicato diversi articoli sulla rivista "Cinema" di Milano e ha collaborato all' "Enciclopedia dello Spettacolo" di Silvio D'Amico edita dall'Istituto per la Collaborazione Culturale di Roma. Dal 1960 fa parte dell'Associazione degli Incisori Veneti. Ha partecipato a centinaia di manifestazioni collettive di grafica e di pittura in tante parti del mondo. Nel 1982 il Comune di Padova gli ha dedicato una mostra antologica nella Civica Galleria di Piazza Cavour ("Dal Realismo all'Utopia").

The centre of my story

I came to art gradually, almost unconsciously. Art was a slow achievement, suffered and firmly pursued. I do think that it should never be different. Our taste refinement is a gradual, imperceptible process, continuously operating choices and desertions.

Numerous great defeats arise and few victories. So many times, what we supposed would turn out to be laborious conquests, in the long run revealed themselves as scorching defeats. Nothing has ever been definitively achieved, and everything can be questioned. I remember that when I was a boy, the books and films I loved were nothing more than a diversion, now we'd define them mere mass products, that have been substituted thanks to the passing of time and improving experiences by more committed products, expressing intelligence. Then I felt the need of a deepening and the choice came true all by itself.

Through new literature and the “real” cinema I found myself and started to see the outlines of my future research field. I was the centre of my own world and I felt I had to be cause and centre of my story. To express myself I had to study the techniques of past and contemporary masters: I had to learn to “see”. I loved Modigliani and Giotto as well. Then the Ben Shahn case exploded (the cultural summa of centuries of figurative narration and one of the greatest poets of our times), he was the artist that I loved above the others, but I loved Carpaccio’s monumental minutiousness too. Finally, in the Japanese wood engraving I discovered formal rigour and figure stylization.

Going over those experiences again with keen humility and analysing their execution was for me a source of inner enrichment, the origin of a necessary learning process. (Ubaldo Bosello, Padua, 1974)

Il centro del mio racconto

All'arte non sono nato per elezione ma vi sono arrivato gradualmente, inconsapevolmente quasi. L'arte è stata una conquista lenta, sofferta, tenacemente voluta. E penso che non dovrebbe essere mai altrimenti. L'affinamento del nostro gusto avviene per gradi impercettibili, operando di continuo scelte e abbandoni.

L'ascesa annovera grosse sconfitte e solo piccolissime vittorie. E, molte volte, anche quelle che crediamo delle faticate conquiste, nel tempo, si rivelano cocenti sconfitte. Nulla si è mai conquistato definitivamente e tutto può essere rimesso in discussione. Ricordo che da ragazzo i libri e i film che amavo non erano che passatempi, banali prodotti di consumo si direbbe ora, che solo col tempo e con l'esperienza vennero sostituiti con prodotti più impegnati in cui l'intelligenza vi appariva espressa. Sentivo allora la necessità di un approfondimento e la scelta si compì da sola.

Con le nuove letture e il cinema «vero» scoprii me stesso e cominciai ad intravvedere i contorni di quello che sarebbe diventato il campo della mia indagine. Il mio mondo ero io stesso e sentivo che dovevo essere motivo e centro del mio racconto. Dovetti quindi per esprimermi studiare le tecniche dei maestri del passato e a me contemporanei: dovetti imparare a «vedere». Amai Modigliani ma anche Giotto. Poi esplose il caso Ben Shahn (Summa culturale di secoli di racconto figurativo oltre che poeta tra i più grandi del nostro tempo) che forse amai più degli altri, ma amai anche la minuziosità monumentale di Carpaccio. Scoprii infine nella xilografia a più legni del lontano Giappone il rigore formale e la stilizzazione della figura.

Ripercorrere con attenta umiltà quelle esperienze e analizzarne il loro compiersi fu per me, oltre che motivo di interiore arricchimento, fonte di indispensabile insegnamento. (Ubaldo Bosello, Padova, 1974)

A poetic world

A short time after I came to Venice in 1960, I by chance turned into a small calle off San Marco. About halfway down I saw a sign «II Torchio» and stepped inside to an overcrowded shop... a huge han press, stacks of etchings and lithographs everywhere and at least five people with the delightful Borin presiding over the confusion. It was there on that same visit that I first saw the work of Ubaldo Bosello and shortly after became the happy owner of «the boy with the kite».

Bosello's work is outstanding in its superb crafmanship; a rare found quality today. His technique of working dates back centuries and I know of no one now working who has better mastery of it. I was impressed by this quality that first day and in the twelve years that i have watched his work develop, Bosello has surpassed himself again and again. Marvelous examples are «the girl in the haystack» and «the boy with the horse». And the world of Bosello... a world so personal and so poetic and so wonderfully Italian, through one recognizes a Japanese influence and a similarity of feeling of the American Ben Shahn. This world that ever repeats itself, always in a new way... that has a quietness and yet speaks to the beholder of another time and of another people... often children alone in their sorrow and their dreams... or simple objects that show they too have lived and served and grown old.

Un mondo poetico

Poco dopo il mio arrivo a Venezia, nel 1960, passai per caso in una piccola calle vicino a Piazza San Marco. Vidi l’insegna “Il Torchio” ed entrai in un laboratorio affollatissimo… un torchio a mano grandissimo, pile di incisioni e litografie dappertutto, e come minimo cinque persone in mezzo alle quali si destreggiava il simpatico Borin. Fu allora che vidi per la prima volta le opere di Ubaldo Bosello, entrando rapidamente e felicemente in possesso del “Ragazzo con l’aquilone” (1961).

Le opere di Ubaldo Bosello si contraddistinguono per la loro straordinaria sapienza artigianale, qualità rara da trovare ai giorni nostri. La sua tecnica di lavoro risale a parecchi secoli fa, e non conosco altri, oggigiorno, che sappiano esprimersi con una capacità pari alla sua. Rimasi immediatamente impressionata dalla qualità, e nei successivi dodici anni in cui ho potuto seguire l’evoluzione del suo lavoro, Bosello si è costantemente migliorato. Esempi meravigliosi sono “La ragazza seduta sul cumulo di fieno” (1966) e il “Ragazzo col cavallo” (1969). Il mondo di Bosello… un mondo personalissimo, pieno di poesia e meravigliosamente italiano, pur attraverso l’influenza riconoscibile dell’arte giapponese è un’affinità di ispirazione con l’americano Ben Shahn, si ripropone sempre in forme diverse… silenzioso… ci parla di momenti e personaggi del passato: bambini solitari, malinconici o sognanti… o ancora oggetti umili, testimoni di un’esistenza un tempo utile.

An Ample and Suspended Time

Ubaldo Bosello is a great poet in the figurative arts. In his paintings and etchings, he sings of the ample and suspended time of adolescence, the magical introspective age of enchantment, of wonder and rapture, of the exploration and discovery of internal spaces as well as the environment as ways to develop self-awareness and a worldview. Certainly, he also speaks to today’s restless, turbulent, often unsatisfying and uncertain teen years, but above all his own teen years before the big economic consumerism boom when cars became all the rage, rhythms became rushed, before the loss of open spaces, roads, riverbanks, bodies of water and fields. For the most part, we used to live outdoors, playing in the streets; we made tree houses, or cabins in bamboo groves. We used to run for many miles along canals and irrigation ditches. Every day was an adventure, sometimes lived in small groups we called “bands,” sometimes in solitude, seeking to relieve psychological tension, with an intimate brew of feelings with intense abandon while embracing nature, stretched out on the alfalfa fields, fishing for fish and frogs, hunting for birds with a slingshot, living in direct relationship with animals (dogs, cats, geese, horses, mules, doves, canaries, cows, cattle, bulls): fragrances, tastes, sounds, colors, with contacts both skin grazing and penetrating, permeating, mysterious perceptions of spaces and differing existential and expanding moments, sometimes interminable. All of this doesn’t make up simply the “subject,” so attentively visited that immediately fascinates us in Ubaldo Bosello’s art, but he impregnates his works with deep feeling like an underlying bass line of the most tender melancholy, nostalgia and hope. In his unique way of working: in his etchings a quality of line: a crosshatched stroke of great figurative precision, capable of defining folds, volumes, prints on fabrics complex and refined with masterful "breaths" of reticulated cross-hatched strokes, sometimes concentrated, sometimes thicker or expanded, imparting vibrant luminosity. The cursive strokes in his painting, freed in our memory from strictly anatomical syntax, become more mobile and expressive, and his colors, all expertly devised and modulated in harmony with the individual mood transmitted to the figure, always portrayed in a pensive mood with introverted concentration. It is essentially the representation of space that manages to connect the whole narrative synthesis in his etchings as much as in his paintings. That space is rarely saturated, but rather, it is simplified, airy, brimming with depth and high horizons that keep our eye on the figures and, taken together, work like natural stage scenery.

The magical existential realism of youth, a special and unique interpretation of everyday metaphysics, examined by careful listening as a doctor does with his stethoscope - I would say – to the essence of youth, discerned as a mysterious blooming of life itself with a multitude of directions and potentialities, but at the same time as his memory's and sensibility's excitement and fervor or, better, of his sensitivity connected directly to nature and nurtured by it. Such are the substantial attributes of Bosello's art.

His poetic sense is truly surprising. His etchings and paintings relate the attentive listening of youth: for the past forty years it amazes me and makes me fall in love with his delicate lyrical vision that allows emotion to slide out of the picture into nature’s seasons of ample and suspended time, often assuming - but always with his great, unique and keen mental grasp - neo-expressionist and neo-realist frames from photography and cinema (the latter is one of Bosello's passions), but mainly purified by the "Eastern" eye, by Japanese graphic-pictorial composite sensibilities, and by the Western eye with inspiration from several American social and "moral" realist painters – Hopper, Eakins and definitely Ben Shahn.

His sense of space, which broadens to wrap the figure in silences, becomes a place of resonance, perception and the continuity of inward space, of thoughts, memories, plans and dreams. In a "present" time it really expands and is suspended between past and future, between listening and waiting – a quiet “hatching place” for nurturing memories and hopes in a "void" and in a light of isolating quality from the context's "noises" so as to accentuate the centripetal aptitude, exploring feelings, emotional onsets, monitoring intimate anxieties. Bosello, with his youths playing with kites or near stone road posts, with his stretched out or squatting figures (a splendid etching that of the “Engaged Couple”) of barefoot young men with big swollen feet, and of young girls with marvelously decorated dresses, with his nocturnes with big moons, rivers, carousels, the carriages in Prà, the arcades, the Paduan water jumps and towers - subjects that recur vibrantly in his etchings as much as in his paintings, providing us with that emotion of "duration of time" that Henri Bergson, and more recently in Peter Hanke's long golden poem (Gedicht an die Dauer -1986-, have brought to our awareness as an essential "sensation of living" ("He who has never experienced the duration of time, has never lived." Hanke emphasizes, so dear to our Tonino Guerra), as a "threshold" toward a more authentic and intimate experience of the world that we're less and less likely to cross, so distracted are we by the transient quality of events, by the ephemeral, by the superficial, and by the rampant flooding of the artificial and the virtual. Un tempo largo e sospeso

Ubaldo Bosello è nelle arti figurative, in pittura e in incisione all’acquaforte, un grande poeta, cantore del tempo largo e sospeso dell’adolescenza, dell’età magica delle introspezioni, degli incantamenti e delle maraviglie, della scoperta e dell’esplorazione degli spazi interni e dell’ambiente come maturare della coscienza di sé e del mondo. Certo anche dell’adolescenza inquieta, turbata, insoddisfatta e incerta di oggi, ma soprattutto di quella sua e di prima del grande boom economico e consumistico, del dilagare delle macchine, dei ritmi affrettati, della perdita degli spazi, delle strade, degli argini dei fiumi e delle acque, dei campi. Vivevamo soprattutto fuori casa, si giocava per le strade, con capanne tra gli alberi o in boschetti di bambù, si percorrevano chilometri e chilometri, attraverso campi, lungo i fossati e le rogge. Ogni giorno era un’avventura, ora vissuta in gruppetti, in ‘bande’ si diceva, ora in solitudine, cercando di scaricare la tensione psicologica, il fermentare intimo delle sensazioni in intensi abbandoni e abbracci naturalistici, stesi sui prati di erba Spagna, pescando pesci e rane, cacciando uccelli con la fionda, in rapporto diretto con animali (cani, gatti, oche, cavalli, asini, colombi, canarini, mucche, buoi, tori): odori, sapori, suoni, colori, contatti epidermici e penetranti, permeanti, misteriose percezioni di spazi e di tempi esistenziali diversi e dilatati, a volte interminabili. E non costituisce, tutto questo, semplicemente il ‘soggetto’, così assiduamente frequentato, che subito affascina nell’arte di Ubaldo Bosello, ma va aggiunto una sorta di sentimento di fondo che impregna i suoi lavori come un ‘basso continuo’ di tenerissime malinconie, nostalgie e speranze e le peculiari modalità esecutive: nell’incisione un segno incrociato di grande nitore disegnativo, capace di definire pieghe, volumi, decorazioni di tessuti complesse e raffinatissime con magistrali “respiri” dei reticoli di tratteggio, concentrati, addensati, espansi e di vibrante luminosità; nella pittura il segno corsivo, liberato nella memoria dalla sintassi strettamente anatomica, per essere maggiormente mobile ed espressivo, ed i colori, tutti inventati, sapientemente modulati in armonia con lo stato d’animo personale trasmesso alla figura, sempre colta in stato pensoso, di introversa attenzione. E a coniugare l’insieme di sintesi narrativa tanto nelle acqueforti quanto nei dipinti è essenzialmente la rappresentazione dello spazio, raramente saturato e, piuttosto, semplificato, arioso, risso di profondità su orizzonti alti che trattengono lo sguardo sulle figure e, insieme, giocano come naturale quinta scenografica.

Il magico realismo esistenziale dell’adolescenza, una particolare e originale accezione della metafisica del quotidiano, ‘auscultata’ – direi proprio - da dentro una giovinezza avvertita come misterioso schiudersi della vita in molteplici direzioni e potenzialità, ma al tempo stesso come fermento e fervore della memoria e della sensibilità o, meglio, della sensitività direttamente collegata alla natura e nutrita da essa, questi sono i caratteri sostanziali dell’arte di Bosello.

E sorprende davvero la sua poetica, il suo incidere e dipingere per raccontare gli ascolti dell’adolescenza: da quarant’anni mi sorprende e m’innamora con la sua delicata visione lirica che fa slittare l’emozione fuori storia, nel tempo largo e sospeso delle ‘stagioni’ della natura, assumendo non di rado – ma sempre con grande, originale prensilità – inquadrature neoespressioniste e neorealiste anche dalla fotografia e cinematografia (questa una delle grandi passioni di Bosello), ma principalmente decantate dallo sguardo ‘orientale’, da sensibilità compositive grafico-pittoriche giapponesi, e da quello occidentale, dai vari realismi sociali e ‘morali’ americani, da Hopper, da Eakins e certamente da Ben Shahn.

Il senso dello spazio, che si slarga e che fascia di silenzi la figura, diventa luogo di risonanza e di percezione e continuità dello spazio interno, dei pensieri, della memoria, dei progetti, dei sogni, in un tempo “presente” davvero dilatato e sospeso tra passato e futuro, tra ascolto e attesa: un quieto “covare” ricordi e speranze in un “vuoto” e in una luce di qualità estranianti dai “rumori” del contesto, così da accentuare l'attitudine centripeta dell'attenzione che esplora sentimenti, insorgenze emotive, sorveglia inquietudini intime. Bosello, con i suoi adolescenti che giocano con gli aquiloni o sui paracarri, con le figure accovacciate o distese (splendida incisione quella dei “Fidanzati”) di giovani uomini scalzi, con piedi grandi e rigonfi, e di ragazze dagli abiti meravigliosamente decorati, con i suoi notturni con grandi lune, il fiume, le giostre, i carrozzoni in Prà, i portici, le riviere e le torri padovane - soggetti che tornano tanto nelle incisioni quanto nelle pitture, vive e ci procura quell'emozione della “durata” che Henri Bergson e più recentemente l’aurco poemetto di Peter Handke (Canto della durata, 1986) hanno segnalato come indispensabile “sensazione di vivere” (“Chi non ha mai provato la durata, non ha vissuto” enfatizza Handke, tanto caro al nostro Tonino Guerra), quale “soglia” verso un’esperienza più autentica e più intima del mondo che sempre meno ci è dato varcare, così distratti dalla transitori età degli eventi, dall’effimero, dal superficiale, e dal dilagare dell’artificiale e del virtuale.
